In about two weeks, I’ll be giving myself a cheek swab to see if I could be a tissue match for Kyle Crawford.
Kyle is a four year old boy who was diagnosed with aplastic anemia. He is half-Caucasian and half-Chinese. Kyle is looking for a marrow donor with Caucasian and Asian heritage.
Very few racial minorities are registered as marrow donors, and the closer you are to a person’s ethnicity, the more likely it is that you’re a tissue match and can donate to them. You must be between the age of 18-60, in good general health, and willing to fill out a consent form and have a cheek swab done, or do it yourself using a kit.
